February 2011 : February Events:
  • Movie Matinees: Featuring some romantic choices - Thursday afternoons at 1:00pm

Food Bank Collection: Thank you for your food donations. During the month of February we will continue to collect nonperishable food goods for our local food bank.


New Display:
 Come in and see our new display and find out which “Authors We Love.”


Love Your Library Month: February is “Love Your Library” month and we will again have a raffle. To win a prize pack of library goodies, all you need to do is stop in and fill out a raffle slip. We will draw one lucky winner on March 2.
For our distant friends we’ll have a contest, too. Finish this sentence “I love my library because…” and email it to us: info@strathmerelibrary.org -  We’ll choose the most “heartfelt” entry and award a prize pack of library goodies. Then look for your entries in March’s newsletter.




January 2011 : January Events:
    Movie Matinees: Featuring oldies but goodies on Thursday afternoons at 1:00pm

Food Bank Collection: We will be collecting nonperishable food goods for our local food bank. A box will be located in the library during the month of January. Stop in and contribute!

December 2010: December Events:
  • December 4th 1:00pm: Tree trimming party at the library! Come for the fun and refreshments!
  • Movie Matinees: We will be featuring Christmas Movies on Thursday afternoons at 1:00pm
Join us for a fun holiday experience!

Books for Christmas: We’ve got a great selection of books for the holidays: books for children, novels of the season, cookbooks and craft books. We also have many holiday VHS tapes for children.

An Old-fashioned Christmas Display:
We have had to replace the wonderful “Sindia Exhibit” that we’ve enjoyed all year. The Ocean City Historic Society did finally need the artifacts for an exhibition of their own. Our newest display is entitled: An Old-fashioned Christmas and features vintage lights, Christmas tree balls, ornaments, toys, etc. There’s probably something in the case that will remind you of holidays past. Do you remember “bubble lights?”

New Children’s DVD’s: Do you have family coming for Thanksgiving? Stop in and check out our DVD’s for children. Here are the newest: Alice in Wonderland - Mulan - Disney/Pixar Cars - Ratatouille - Finding Nemo and Up

Decoy Display: Thank you to Gina, Dick and Rick for loaning us your decoys and bird carvings. We will soon have a nice display for our front case. And there’s still room for more! Stop in and look them over.

Weekly Brainteaser: Win a prize instantly! When you stop in, try to solve our brainteaser. It’s different every week. Mike Daniels was our first winner. You could be the next winner!

  • Used Book Sale: September 10-18
  • Great New Jersey Coastal Storms” video: repeat presentation on September 23 6:30-8:00pm
  • Children’s Summer Reading Club,” Dive into Reading”: Please bring in completed forms (a list of the books that you read this summer) and get a prize!
  • If you have some ideas for fun things to do at the library on Thursday evenings this fall, we would like to hear from you. We could also use some volunteers who are free to come in on Thursday evenings and help with the fun and games.
Amnesty Month – September
Return your overdue books this month. No overdue fines will be collected between September 7 and September 30, 2010.

September – Library Card Month:
September is the ALA’s (American Library Association) “Sign-up for a Library Card Month”. Remember: the library card is the smartest card in your wallet.

June 2010: Tuesday, June 15th 10-10:30 am - There will be a service on the beach (behind the library) to commemorate the sinking of the General Slocum. Service has been organized by Capt. Ronald Sinn and the Lutheran pastor from Stone Harbor. After the service, Capt. Sinn will be in the library to answer any questions and share his wealth of pictures and information about the General Slocum.

Membership Renewal! If your membership is up for renewal, send a check to the library, stop in or renew during our anniversary celebration. Remember: individual $25 and family $45 (no forms to fill out).

Anniversary Celebration: Our First Anniversary Celebration will be on Friday, June 25th at 7:00pm. Join us for light refreshments and see the wonderful growth of the library this past year!

Volunteers Needed for the Summer: Please consider volunteering your time and talents at our library. An hour or a day – anything you can do is appreciated.

May 2010: Used Book Sale:
Our first used book sale this year will be held over Memorial Day Weekend and the following week: May 28th - June 5th. We will have our large sign out front to remind you! Stop in and see our selection of adult and children’s books, magazines and VHS tapes for sale.

April 2010: Renewal Time!
Hooray, spring is finally here and summer is just around the corner! If you were one of our first members, your membership will be up for renewal May 31st. Please stop in anytime and renew! We look forward to seeing you.

April 11 – 17th: National Library Week
Since 1958, National Library Week has been observed by the American Library Association (ALA) to encourage the use and appreciation of our libraries. In the mid-1950’s research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios and televisions. The ALA created National Library Week to increase awareness of libraries. Fifty-two years later we’re competing with even more electronic devices, but we still need to protect our libraries. National Library Week at the Schiavo will feature a Book Lovers Trivia Quiz and Raffle. Stop in for details.
March 2010: U.S. Census: Representatives from the U.S. Census will be using our library as a help station during the month of March until April 19th, every Wednesday 10 - 2 pm. Please stop in if you need any information about the census.

Movie Matinees: Movie matinees will continue this spring - more title choices are available thanks to donations from all our friends and members. Matinees: Every Wednesday at 1:00 pm.
January 2010: Teapot Display: January features a display of teapots and tea drinking items and a “Tea Trivia Quiz.”

Movie Matinees: Beat the winter blahs – Wednesdays at 1:00 pm.
April 2009 Membership Enrollment Month!
May 24 to June 6

Teen Art Contest: Members may participate by viewing the exhibit, deciding on their favorites, and filling out a ballot. Every member may complete one ballot. Visit the library between May 24 and June 6, 2009 to register your choices. We are not open every day, so please call ahead (609-486-6265) for specific days and times and…you be the judge!

“New Jersey Collection” established @ the Schiavo
This special addition to the Library, will feature materials in all formats that relate to New Jersey. 

Items in this collection will be interspersed throughout the Library and will feature a small representation of the state flag so that they are easily identifiable by Members.  The collection includes works by New Jersey authors, movies set in the Garden State, or topics that relate to the area like shorebirds, pirates, or seafood cookery, for example.

We will continue to add to the New Jersey Collection as funds allow.

Final days for Members to cast ballots for the winners in the Teen Art Contest, Surfing the Opportunities.  Visit the Library to view the submissions and record your selections (one vote per Member).
June 7
Teen Art Contest Awards Presentation
Winners of the Surfing the Opportunities Contest will be announced and presented with their awards during this special event @ the Schiavo on June 7 (4PM).  Members are invited to attend and support these talented young artists.
June 14 Flag Day
June 19 - 25 Schiavo Library closed in preparation for the Grand Opening & Open House on June 26, 2009.

ART EXHIBIT – “Strathmere: Historical Perspective” - The current exhibit was collected by Carol Baker and framed by Dave Townsend . It features a wonderful selection of photographs of Strathmere through the years and is our permanent collection. In the future, we will feature exhibits in other media and by a variety of artists or amateurs for your enjoyment.

MINI MUSEUM – 48 sq. ft. of history, art, & culture - Current Exhibit: “Hand-carved Shorebirds” - This exhibit is on loan from Ocean City resident, Gus Bruno, who has been collecting examples of hand-carved waterfowl for many years. Our tiny museum space (in the vestibule of the Schiavo Library) will feature new exhibits quarterly. If you are interested in exhibiting your collection, please complete the Guest Curator form and we will contact you concerning arrangements.

KID'S NITE - Megan Riordan is organizing a series of book and craft nights for children on Wednesday evenings. Each event will have a different, specific theme (see below). Children are invited to participate for one night, or enjoy the entire series! Pick up a flyer @ the Schiavo for complete details and to register your child. FREE for Members.

AUTHOR VISIT (July 29, 11am to 1pm) @ the SchiavoLocal authors, Fred and Susan Miller , will visit the library to talk about their latest book, Ocean City Baby Parade , which is just being published. They have written several other books about the area – at least one features historic postcards of Strathmere (some of which were obtained from Bruce and Gwen Riordan). They will be happy to answer questions and autograph copies of their books (pre-purchase required*)

Sun Rose Words & Music in Ocean City will give our members a discount for Book Club purchases*, so if you would like to order a copy of the Miller's books(s), please contact the library so we can place a group book order.

“Sea Creatures with Amazing Features” is an interactive program about some of the amazing shore animals that live in our region presented by the Wetlands Institute.  Provided through a grant from the Strathmere Fishing & Environmental Club (S.F.E.C.), the program will take place at the Schiavo Library (801 South Commonwealth Ave., Strathmere) from 7PM to 8PM. 

Participants will learn about a variety of animals (depending on availability) like sea stars, crabs, or horseshoe crabs.  There will also be a touch-tank for a close encounter with local creatures at the conclusion of the program.

Participants are invited to bring beach chairs for this family-friendly, outdoor event.

VOICES & VISIONS Celebration of the Arts @ the Schiavo

September 7 LABOR DAY - This recognition of the contributions of workers was first celebrated in 1882.  For additional information, visit the US Dept. of Labor (www.dol.gov).
September 11   PATRIOT DAY - At the direction of the President, American flags should be displayed on the homes of Americans & on all government buildings on this day.  Flags should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect.  Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46AM – the time the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. September 12 WHAT GOES UP! 10AM @ the Schiavo - Derrick Pitts, Director of Education for the Franklin Institute, will be presenting a fun and educational explanation of gravity.  This lively demonstration, free for Schiavo Library Members of all ages will begin at 10AM.

GRANDPARENTS DAY - This celebration of grandparents was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978.  The official flower of the day is the “Forget-Me-Not.”  Children can download a free Grandparents Day greeting card to color at http://parenting.leehansen.com

September 17 CONSTITUTION DAY & CITIZENSHIP DAY - This combined event commemorates the formation and signing of the Constitution of the United States on September 17, 1787.  It also recognizes all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, are U.S. citizens.
September 19  ROSH HASHANAH - According to Jewish tradition, this is a time of judgment and remembrance.  The shofar is an important symbol of this celebration.

BOOK SALE @ the Schiavo - Proceeds will benefit the General Slocum shipwreck display case and memorial exhibit and the Schiavo Library collection. 
The General Slocum disaster is known as the “Poor People’s Titantic” and the remains of this vessel eventually sank off of Strathmere – almost directly offshore from the Schiavo Library.  Cape May County resident, Captain Sinn, is working tirelessly to preserve and protect the site. He will be one of the speakers featured October 3 @ the Schiavo with a representative of the Ocean City Historical Museum who will be sharing a PowerPoint presentation about the Sindia shipwreck.
